10 stylish postpartum wardrobe essentials

post baby fashion ideas

The days and weeks post-baby are not only a wonderland of newness as you get used to the fresh baby at your house, they can also be a whole new confusing kettle of fish when it comes to fashion choices.

Luckily you have buddies like us! We’ve compiled this helpful postpartum fashion cheat-sheet to help expectant mums plan for those exciting, exhausting post-baby days. Not only will you be so happy to cast off the looks you’ve been wearing all pregnancy-long, you get to wear cute-regular-lady clothes again! Yay!

Here’s how to work with your post-baby bod and still look fab. (Spoiler: There’s not a tent or mu-mu in sight!)

1. Striped nursing dress by DOTE

Not only is this on-trend dress super-cute, it has a concealed panel for easy breastfeeding, if you are able to do that. It’s a multi-tasking marvel, taking mums from pregnancy through to postpartum and its easy-wear, easy-care too!

2. High-waisted postpartum leggings by Blanqi

Post-baby bodies have had a bit of a shake-up, so comfy high-waisted leggings not only help to streamline things, they provide a stylish wardrobe base to build from. Add a tee, or a dress, maybe a tunic top? Mix and match for a fashionably organised postpartum belly!

3. Cotton button-through shirt dress by Bird Keepers

This dress is a no-brainer. It’s perfect for new mums, breastfeeding or not, and washes and wears well too. Wear with or without leggings. Layer with a long-sleeve tee in cooler months. Fancy up with strappy metallic sandals for evening, or pair with slides and a stroller-baby-combo for day time wear!

4.  Embroidered cotton dress by Little Tienda

Little Tienda are the queens of gorgeous, practical frocks. They are easy to wash and wear and look super-fabulous with a minimum of effort. Bare leg this one with sneakers or work the mummy catwalk – aka footpath leading to local shops – with leggings and sandals, if you prefer.

5. Medium-wash elastic waist jeggings by Boho Bird

While you may find your old jeans a little bracing post-baby, these jeggings sport a similarly stylish look in a much more forgiving way. They suit a range of body types and their elastic waist ensures that not only can your new-mum self actually breathe in these, you can even move about and bend over. Praise the lord!

6. World’s Okay-est Mum tee by Reslience Street Wear

If you are a perfect mum, you might want to skip over this, but for many of us this t-shirt completely nails our approach to parenthood. Start as you mean to go on. Be the okay-est mum on your block!

7. Synchronised swimmer tee by Gorman

Gorman are really great at prints and this swimmer tee is no exception. If you’re feeling a little at odds with your evolving, surprising body, pairing a statement tee like this with something more basic on the bottom is a nice way to find your feet again (and still look super fashionable!)

8. Wide leg black pant by ASOS Curve

ASOS Curve do heaps of really great fashion for women above size 14. These wide legged pants are understated and comfy and they’ll accommodate post-baby curves in chic style. Just pair with a striped, boxy tee or statement print top and you are good to go!

9. Stretch chambray tencel skirt by Target

Target always have great basics and this skirt is no exception. The comfy draw-string waist gives you some room to move and allows for a bit of shape-shifting, post baby. This skirt would look ace with a boxy, hip-length tee.

10. Sunday Stripe tee by Abode

A bit of coverage in terms of tee-length and sleeve length can be a comfort in the days and weeks after your baby makes their appearance. This tee would work perfectly with the chambray skirt, jeggings, wide-leg pant or leggings featured above. (We know, we know. Leggings are not pants. Unless you want them to be. It’s up to you!)

Other great things to invest in

  • Many pairs of giant, black undies for those bleary post-baby days (non-staining and comfy!)
  • Well fitted nursing bras (enlist the help of a bra fitting expert!)
  • Comfy bike shorts (sometimes you want some discreet-yet-secure thigh coverage under your frock!)
  • Cosy cardigans or wraps for those late night feeds.

Have fun getting dressed!
