The Kmart cubby house hack taking over Instagram – and parents’ lives

This $199 cubby from Kmart has become a bit of a deco darling, as parents snap the hard-to-find playhouses up and put their own brilliant stamp on them. We should warn you that you’re probably going to move right in!

Hudson and Harlow’s Hamptons home

Genius Perth stylist Alicia of Hudson and Harlow shared the above image of the amazing restyle she gave her children’s Kmart cubby a month or so ago, and it seems other parents were as inspired by her handiwork as we are!

They quickly followed suit, putting their own stamp on this ace playhouse. Even PR it girl Roxy Jacenko and her hubby joined the cubby redo crew, apparently in collaboration with paint-makers and colour lovers, Dulux.

What started off as a lovely, if basic, cubby was suddenly transformed into something you might find in a posh Hampton’s estate – or at Jamie and Jools’ country home, at the very least!

We’d like to thank Alicia for sparking so many creative incarnations of this basic-yet-fun kiddo structure.

It’s a Kmart cubby house movement!

Luckily parents are not just hacking these cubbies within a stylish inch of their lives, they’re sharing the results on Instagram in what’s fast becoming a global cubby beautification movement as everyone gets excited and busts their chops to join in.

The Kmart Wooden Cubby House is apparently as hotly contested as an Aldi motorised vehicle or vacuum cleaner, and currently out of stock online. That said, word on the street is that SOME people have spotted the much-coveted cubby in some Kmart stores. We’d advise phoning ahead to avoid disappointment, if you’re on the lookout for one of these cute mini-homes for your mini-person.
