Netflix announces unlimited parental leave for staff

Streaming service Netflix has just announced a game-changing maternity and paternity leave package for its employees – and it’ll make you green with envy.

It seems employers are realising the value of giving new mums and dads the flexibility to return to work at a pace that suits their families. In a blog post, Netflix’s Chief Talent Officer Tawni Cranz revealed an enviable new policy – unlimited leave for new mums and dads, allowing them to take off as much time as they want during the first year after their child’s birth or adoption.

“We want employees to have the flexibility and confidence to balance the needs of their growing families without worrying about work or finances,” says Ms Cranz. “Parents can return part-time, full-time, or return and then go back out as needed. We’ll just keep paying them normally, eliminating the headache of switching to state or disability pay.”

Netflix says each employee will have the chance to figure out what’s best for their family, and then work with their managers to cover their absences.

In what’s becoming a growing trend, the major employer acknowledges that Netflix’s continued success depends on retaining the most talented people in their field.

“Experience shows people perform better at work when they’re not worrying about home. This new policy, combined with our unlimited time off, allows employees to be supported during the changes in their lives and return to work more focused and dedicated,” Ms Cranz says.

It follows the lead set by Richard Branson, who has given new parents working at Virgin a year’s leave at full pay.
