Ingenious camping essentials every family should have

Camping essentials 1

Easter school holidays are upon us which means one thing – it’s time to break out the camping gear and head into the great outdoors! To ensure your outdoor adventure is filled with plenty of laughs, we’ve collected our must-have camping essentials to stock up on before you go.

Let’s start with your storage solutions. For storing clothes, toys and other essentials, we recommend these durable and reusable storage sacks from Tellkiddo. Not only are these affordable but they are perfect for storing just about anything, whether on the road or at home. Let the kids fill up one with their toys, use another one to hold all clothing and linen and stock another one with your camping necessities, such as toilet paper, paper towel, sunscreen, batteries, torches, mosquito repellent, pots, dishes and cutlery. Bring an extra one to store all the dirty washing so you can easily sort through the laundry once home.

It’s a good idea to take a plastic storage container along with you too. You can use it for bathing baby, doing the dishes and storing the groceries (see top image). We love the range at Howard’s Storage World.

These are perfect for day outings away from the campsite to hold swimmers, snacks, sand toys, cameras and phones. Roll it up, scrunch it, fold it up – it then pops back into shape when needed. They are available in six colours – green, blue, red, pink, yellow and purple and perfect for every member of the family.

If you are travelling with bub, you will need something that safely stores breast milk or mixed formula. The Nutto’s Mamma milk warmer is a great solution when on the go. The insulated stainless steel will maintain the heat, so the milk will be heated or thawed without too much of a wait. Genius!

Storage aside, it’s time to relax! And we absolutely adore these waterproof beanbags from Tigeroy. These beanbags are perfect for sitting, lying on or lounging on around the campsite. They come in six bright colours and each has a large, sturdy eyelet in one corner so you can easily hang them on the line when wet. Compared to the traditional stiff camping chairs, these waterproof beanbags are comfort-overload!

Next on the list are these funky and unique camping cutlery adaptors. The ladle and stabber attachments simply screw on to sticks you find around the campsite. My kids would go absolutely nuts over these! Spend a few minutes walking along the trails and let everyone pick out their perfect sticks for meal times and roasting marshmallows after baths.

Speaking of sticks, check out these colourful silicone connectors, designed to make fort building effortless and fun for the whole family! Stick-lets will transform the great outdoors into your children’s very own Mobilo set where they can magically connect sticks to create the castle or fort of their dreams.

Most campgrounds are safe havens for families, with plenty of other parents camping next to you and swarms of children riding bikes, racing around the trails and running back and forth from the playground to the campground. However, you can never be too careful, which is why a Kiband is such a good decision when in the wild. KiBand uses Bluetooth technology to help you keep track of your child. Parents are able to create custom safe perimeters using a smartphone app so they can program the KiBand to stay within the campground perimeter.

For crawling campers, check out these adorable and innovative Overcrawls – the perfect outfit for grubby exploration. Don’t worry about hard surfaces, dirt stains, muddy puddles or wet grass  – these leather overalls come with extra knee padding, keep wetness away and easily wipe clean. Do they make them in adult sizes?

After a big day of exploring, it’s time to call it a night. While tents are usually anything but glamorous, Field Candy has challenged this perception. Forget your standard brown tent and instead pick one of Field Candy’s delicious designs. Choose jellybeans, assorted sandwiches or colourful monsters like the one above and add a little flavour to your camping experience.

But, wait! There’s more! Because Field Candy also has a range of stylish children’s tents, perfect for the little campers. There are six funky designs to choose from and the tents are light-weight, weatherproof, UV-resistant and fire retardant.

So now you’re covered for entertainment, sleeping and storage once you arrive. But what about getting there? In addition to packing the regular snacks, checking the safety of your car and familiarising yourself with the best car activities, we recommend relying on an iPad, for at least a few minutes of silence. Be sure to also download the new ABC Kids iview app for a constant stream of kiddy favourites.

Ahh.. the serenity.
