There are family holidays, and then there are family adventures. Get your family bucket list out, and jot this one down – we’re heading to Botswana.
The African wilderness – is there a more enticing destination for young explorers? If an adventure is what your tribe is after, this package is the perfect way to dip your toe into the bubbling pool of excitement that is Africa.
The Young Explorers package is based at one of two adventure camps. Footsteps Camp (Okavango Delta) accommodates six guests, in three twin-bedded Meru tents – how’s that for authentic? One of these tents can be converted into a family tent sleeping three, and each tent has a bucket shower and porcelain flush toilet. Appetites are well catered for, thanks to a chef who works out of a bush kitchen.
The second option is the Saile Camp (Linyanti), which is also accommodated with tents. These options have private ensuite bathrooms, flushing toilets and hot water-filled bucket showers. Guest are able to enjoy meals in a main dining and lounge area.
There are family activities, while parents wanting a break are also able to leave their children with trained Young Explorer guides, who will entertain the kids.
As part of Young Explorers, children learn how to track game, on foot and in a vehicle. They’re also taught how to make small animal traps, start a fire from two sticks and identify birds.
The three night, four day safaris include light aircraft flights along with all meals and activities such as bush craft, animal spotting, and fishing.
The kids will learn about the behaviour of native animals, and then get the chance to see them in their natural habitat – something that’s sure to become a lifetime memory.
Packages start at US$2199 per person for three nights, based on four PAX. The open season this year extends to November 30, next year it begins on March 1 until November 30. The minimum age for children on these safaris is seven, however younger children will be considered on request.
