Star Wars fans – a galaxy far, far away, is about to get much, much closer. Disney has just revealed it will be creating huge Star Wars-themed lands, including a new planet, at two of its parks – Disneyland and Disney World. Cue audible geek-gasps from across the globe (including from this writer!).
The D23 Expo (the ultimate biannual Disney fan event) may have just wrapped, but the excitement surrounding the massive Star Wars announcement continues to bounce around the rest of the globe. Erin Glover, Disneyland Resort’s social media manager says the ambitious plan will transport guests to a “never-before-seen planet, a remote trading port and one of the last stops before wild space where Star Wars characters and their stories come to life”.
Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger told more than 7,500 fans at the D23 Expo that the Star Wars-themed lands will be created at Disneyland park in Anaheim, California, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
“We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever. These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance,” he reveals.
The lands will each be more than five and a half hectares in size, with the artists’ concepts showing incredible detail. The two main attractions of the lands will be the Millennium Falcon, which will be on a customised, secret mission, and a Star Wars adventure that will place visitors smack bang in the centre of a battle.
Unfortunately, Disney doesn’t yet have a time frame for these epic creations, but much of the chatter indicates they will be some years (hopefully not light years) away.
