Monstrum – not your ordinary playground equipment

Why just have monkey bars when you can have a whole monkey? Or an owl. Or giant robots.

Monstrum, a Danish-based design firm are setting the (monkey) bar very high with their incredibly imaginative playground designs.

Giant structures serve as centrepieces for Monstrum’s amazing playgrounds which also incorporate all the usual favourites – scramble nets, swings, slides and climbing walls. Look a little closer and playful details are revealed – crawl inside a whale’s mouth and into its tummy; look at the ‘starry sky’ in the turret of a magical tower; bounce on the alphabet; and make a nail-biting escape from a sinking cargo ship.

Monstrum was founded by Ole B. Nielsen and Christian Jensen, and the firm has extensive experience in theatrical set design – their penchant for the dramatic is evidenced in their playground designs – hordes of attacking insects, a gigantic octopus overtaking a huge ocean liner, crooked houses that appear to be tossed in the wind. It’s exciting stuff.

Monstrum have worked on playgrounds in a number of countries including Denmark, Sweden and Russia.

Katrina studied planning and design, did the hard yards working in a big office building and then traded it all in for a relaxing (!) life at home with four children. She now fills her time with writing, completing a degree in genetics and taxiing her children around Melbourne to their various sporting commitments (not necessarily in that order).
