There are few things that are as cute for a nursery as a woodland theme, and lucky baby Isla has a room with a most gorgeous take on this gender neutral theme.
Mum Kimberley says of putting together her daughter’s room: We began renovating our house just before Isla was born, so we were in a rental for the first six months of her life. During this time I began collecting a few objects here and there to put in her room, but really didn’t finish it until only recently (Isla is now 13 months!).
Having the time to gather, and in some instances make and revamp her own childhood toys has certainly paid off, resulting in a modern room with some lovely vintage elements to add warmth and history.
I decided on a loosely ‘themed’ woodland nursery quite early on because of two things – firstly, the wallpaper which I absolutely loved when I first saw it and wanted a way of incorporating that into the room, I think it makes it quite cosy & semi rustic with the dark carpet and the sandstone walls. The second thing was finding a girl on Etsy who made mobiles, and I was able to liaise with her about what I wanted.
Kimberley wanted to keep the room gender neutral should it later be used for another sibling so she kept the key room items quite neutral, with grey, white and natural stone and timber. I then added the pops of duck egg blue and pale pink, with a deeper red coming in from the toadstool elements, and made it more ‘girly’ that way. I sanded back and painted the fireplace surround and mantelpiece using chalk paint for a softer matte finish, and we searched for vintage tiles for the sides.
The beautiful pink doll’s pram was Kimberley’s from childhood. She repainted and restored it for Isla, creating not just a lovely toy, but an heirloom and vintage decorative feature as well.
