Is it a toy? Is it furniture?

It takes a savvy designer to come up with a piece of children’s furniture that is also an equally fantastic toy – most pieces that fall into the furniture/ toy category are a bit more furniture than toy or the other way around.

The Max in the box is the exception. It works well as a desk, shelves and a chair or as a cubby, a pretend boat or a shop – the ‘toy’ aspect is limited only by your imagination.

The Maxbox was created by Austrian design company, Perludi. Babyology has marvelled over the clever pieces from Perludi before, particularly the loft bed and the rocker, but because of its versatility, the Max in the box is my favourite.

Each Max in the box comes with two ‘elements’ that can be slotted together and arranged in endless configurations. They are delivered flat packed and are quick and easy to assemble thanks to the unique assembly slots. The Max in the box is made from birch plywood and is available in a choice of eight vibrant colours.

I suspect the this is somewhat addictive – extend your kid’s creativity (and your furniture options) with additional sets.

The Max in the box is €150 and is available from Kids Love Design, who happily ship to Australia.

Katrina Whelen

Katrina studied planning and design, did the hard yards working in a big office building and then traded it all in for a relaxing (!) life at home with four children. She now fills her time with writing, completing a degree in genetics and taxiing her children around Melbourne to their various sporting commitments (not necessarily in that order).
