Many people dream of a simpler job and a slower lifestyle, but not everyone manages to achieve it – which is why I love the story behind these quaint and colourful retro storage baskets (that are jaw-droppingly sweet). Over a long lunch in the French countryside, new parents Charlotte and Philippe decided to leave their jobs and start a business selling products that represent “the good old days”.
The result is Rice, a Danish home wares and accessories business that is now thriving. And the good old days are certainly evident in these gorgeous, extraordinarily detailed storage baskets, which look like they were handcrafted decades ago.
There are more than 40 completely different house toy baskets and handmade raffia basket designs to choose from so I suggest making a cuppa and settling in before browsing! I particularly like the Small Happy Camper Box, the Large Foldable Toy Basket in Kitchen Stove Design (pictured above, middle) and the Medium Circus Toy Basket.
Unfortunately, unless you’re heading to Europe, you might have to wait a few months to buy one. Lark stocks Rice locally but baskets only usually around Christmas time – and only a small selection, which they are yet to decide on. Hopefully the one you like will be available, but it’s no guarantee. Alternatively, Corner Store currently stocks a set of three house basket designs.
As for Rice, it sells everything from hobby horses and hand puppets to embroidered wall art and cushions – but the company is known mostly for its melamine kitchen products, storage products and glazed tableware. The website is well worth a look.
