Prince George gets his own TV show – but is it terribly tone deaf?

In these days of Prince Harry and Prince Andrew being all over the news, it’s almost surprising to hear something about young heir to the throne, Prince George.

The Prince comes to the small screen

The latest chatter is that bonny Prince George is set to hit the small screen, via a brand new TV show called The Prince.

The new HBO streaming service — called HBO Max — just announced The Prince is on the way.

It’s apparently inspired by the satirical Instagram account of Family Guy and Will and Grace writer Gary Janetti who makes a habit out of lampooning the royals.

Prince George is the favourite antagonist on Gary’s satirical account and now his famous one-liners and caustic captions will transform into a much more wordy animated series.

“I’m thrilled to be working at HBO Max and bringing them yet another series about a family ruthlessly fighting for the throne,” Gary, who is married to one time The Rachel Zoe Project TV stylist Brad Goreski, told Variety.

Gary’s Instagram account is a roaring success with over 900,000 followers and heaps of comments and engagement, with HBO clearly having their sights firmly set on this existing audience.

This 20th Century Fox series is a big deal with some big actors voicing the royal family’s members.

Janetti himself will voice Prince George, Orlando Bloom will voice Prince Harry, Condola Rashad (aka Kate in Billions) voices Meghan Markle, Lucy Punch (of Motherland and A Series of Unfortunate Events) will voice Kate Middleton, actor Tom Hollander voices both Prince Philip and Prince Charles, Alan Cumming stars as George’s butler Owen, veteran screen star Frances De La Tour as Queen Elizabeth, and Game of Thrones’ Iwan Rheon will voice Prince William.

“We’re so excited to bring the world Gary’s created on Instagram over to HBO Max, where our viewers can discover what his Instagram fans already know – that George can be hilarious, shocking, and surprisingly sweet,” Sarah Aubrey, head of original content for HBO Max told Variety.

“We can’t wait to see what Gary does with a bigger canvas to paint on than just a 1:1 square.”

Honestly? We hope they don’t go too hard on George. He’s just a wee boy and we’ve already seen the toll life in the royal spotlight can take on young men as Harry shifts his family to Canada.

One wonders if this focus on George — another highly scrutinised young man born into the monarchy — is a little bit tone deaf.
