This fabulous foursome from New York City have just dropped their fifth album and it is delicious! It’s music for kids that parents will appreciate, with collaborations from Mike Dillon, The Chapin Sisters, and more – plus an upbeat Woody Guthrie cover. It’s rollicking good fun.
Rolie Polie Guacamole may be a band for kids but their sound is certainly mature. No surprise then that lead vocalist Frank Gallo has been performing since age 15 and is the son of legendary kids’ musician Lou Gallo. His years of experience certainly shine through with crisp lyrics served up in a smooth voice with a side of tasty upbeat instrumental layers.
Together through five albums over nine years, Rolie Polie Guacamole have a great sound that is Latin-flavoured with a dash of rock and lots of upbeat that will make your booty boogie. Their songs are about eating healthy, keeping active, and visiting places like the museum, plus a sprinkling of animal tunes for good measure.
My favourite track is the rocking The Mantis (above), while Bird Belly encourages interactive dance moves, and Brush Your Teeth has a message I’m sure we can all get behind.
So often we see music for children that is minimalistic and simplified, as if younger minds cannot comprehend the intricacies of a solidly good tune. Chips & Salsa is an album that smashes through this condescending concept to deliver high quality music for young ears. Plus, it creates music that we parents can happily play over and over without being nauseated.
For those music aficionados amongst us, let me name drop a bit here. You will notice tastes of Primus, Ween, Pink Floyd, and the Beatles in the Rolie Polie Guacamole sound. The final track is a wonderful cover of Woodie Guthrie’s This Land is Your Land, featuring percussionist Mike Dillon of Les Claypool and Ani DiFranco fame. If you want genuinely rocking sounds that cater to kids then this is the album for you.
You can download the album for US$10 or grab a CD for US$15 plus shipping at Rolie Polie Guacamole.
