Louise Loves Art (and I love Louise)

louise-loves-art-kelly-light-2 “I love art! It’s my imagination on the outside!”

It’s not often that I find myself quoting directly from a picture book in everyday conversation but I think Louise’s description of art is perfection (and very quotable). Louise Loves Art is Kelly Light’s debut and what an impressive debut it is.

We meet Louise, busy drawing, with her artwork spread around her on the floor. She explains why she loves art and reveals that she is determined to create her pièce de résistance. We also meet Louise’s little brother, whose name happens to be Art. While Louise is focused on her masterpiece, Art is busy making art of his own, namely using a red crayon and scissors to make paper glasses just like the real glasses Louise wears. Unfortunately, Art uses one of Louise’s best drawings for his creation.louise-loves-art-kelly-light-4

This is not a long book and despite Light’s economical use of words, there’s a lot of truth, wisdom and humour in the story. Louise proclaims, “To be a great artist, you have to notice everything.” (yes, very true) and soon after takes one of her (many) masterpieces to the Gallery du Fridge  (make sure you read that bit in a French accent!).

In Louise and Art, Light has created instantly endearing characters. The book has lots of visual appeal, pops of bright red (reminiscent of Ian Falconer’s Olivia series) play against the crisp, fifties-cartoon-like characters and the ample white space.

This book is a true delight and I sincerely hope we see more of Louise and her little brother.

Louise Loves Art is suitable for children aged three years and over. Find it online at Book Depository. Book Depository deliver free to Australia.
