Those of us who can remember the seventies and eighties (and earlier!) probably have memories of faux woodgrain alarm clocks with their enormous white numbers, which marked the passing of every minute with a comforting click. Now the craze for mid-century modern homewares has brought them back, but with a twenty-first century edge.
This is a wooden alarm dock from Areaware. It’s made from sustainable beech, and not only is it a handy place to store and charge your phone overnight, but you might find it replaces the need for a bedside alarm clock. It comes in a natural stain, or in a variety of colours that make it great as a dock for children’s bedrooms too (unless you just want to keep it for yourself, which I must admit is tempting to me).
There are no electrical components – instead (as you can see in the video below) there is a space through which you feed your phone charger when the phone is in the dock. Pair it up with a flip clock app like this one, and you’ve created your own mid-century alarm clock!
At just $50 it’s a striking and affordable piece of design for the bedside table. Pick one up from Kido Store in yellow, pink, orange and green.
