As beautiful as childbirth may be, glamorous it is not. As we smile for those precious, post-birth photos, clutching our fresh little bundles of joy, our faces are etched with hours of labour and lack of sleep – and usually not a hint of make-up. But now mums are hiring make-up artists and hairdressers to give them a birthing suite makeover and ensure those first photos are picture perfect.
There’s nothing like post-birth photos to remind us just how trying (an joyous) our births were. And these are the images that usually grace social media, in all their raw glory. But there’s a new breed of mums who want their first photos post-birth to be fabulous. And they’re willing to turn the birthing suite into a salon to ensure they look their best.
The New York Times spoke to one of the city’s salons, which is experiencing a 200 per cent increase in hospital books for new mums, in the last three months. The Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa charges around US$500 for an in hospital ‘mummy makeover’.
While the stylists can’t give a full salon treatment in hospital, the pampering is enough to give mums a much-need lift.
“No one wants ‘I’m going to a black-tie event’ hair,” stylist for Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger, Chris Lospalluto tells The Times. “They just want to look fresh, just a better version of themselves. You’ve got to spruce them up because everybody’s coming to see them.”
Jackson Simmonds from the Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa says he uses dry shampoo or spritzed water to freshen up the locks of mums who can’t wash their hair post-birth. “It’s not like the full-on blowout you would have in a salon, for logistical reasons,” he says. “Nonetheless, it comes out looking good.”
The Babyology jury is still out on this one, although we all agree, we’d love a ‘glam squad’ to visit our homes for, say, the next five years post birth!
