8 things all mums should remember when they’re having a teary day

Some days as a mum are just a little too much, right? Yes, the joy we feel over our bundles of love is beyond anything we could have imagined (so much sparkle!), but did you ever think you’d be so emotional? And so freakin’ tired?!

It’s no wonder then that we all have days where we cry like our babies and just want a soothing swaddle and pat on the bottom. Well, the last bit isn’t going to happen, so here are some things you can tell yourself when it all gets on top of you.

1. I’m just really bloody tired

You may have just put your baby’s wet nappy back on when you meant to change him, but you aren’t loosing the plot. Just sleep – and a lot of it. When you’re chronically sleep deprived it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. Blame the lack of sleep. In fact, you can blame it for most of your mummy bad days.

2. It’s not me, it’s my hormones

If you’ve recently given birth, are breastfeeding or pregnant, then you need to write this one in lipstick on your bathroom mirror! You are not a bitch. Those mummy hormones swirling around your body are to blame for so much of what you are feeling and thinking. Remind your partner of this too when you snap at him for the zillionth time today.

3. I’m actually nailing this mum thing

Yes, you are. Just look at your little marvel of wonder to remind yourself that you’re doing a stellar job. You are your baby’s favourite person and he loves you with all of his teeny tiny heart. Forget the books and those other mums for a moment (who can make you question yourself), you are the best person for the job of mothering YOUR baby. In fact, no one else can do it better! You’ve got this.

4. I can’t and shouldn’t do it all

Yes your washing pile has become a mountain and you can’t remember the last time you vacuumed, but you are a mum, not a superhero. You are doing the single most important job in the world. The sooner you accept that you can’t, and shouldn’t do it all, the better for you and your family.

5. I’m still me

You might be hearing ‘mum’ more than your own name these days, but you are still you. Motherhood can be a huge identity sapper, but the essence of you is still there. You are not lost. Just busy.

6. I’ll start fresh tomorrow

Each day is a new day. Sure your baby may have woken up early from her nap today and is giving you hell now – so much so, that the chicken curry you were planning on cooking for dinner just isn’t going to happen – but tomorrow is a fresh start. Oh, and there are eggs in the fridge (easy dinner sorted).

7. This too shall pass

You may be arguing with your toddler today to eat his carrots, but tomorrow you’ll be hassling him to study for his HSC. Remind yourself that every mum battle has it’s time and place and that every stage of parenthood goes by in the blink of an eye. As the saying goes, the days are long but the years are short – sniff!

8. It’s OK to cry – I need a mummy meltdown!

Crying is a release and sometimes the best way to feel better is to just let it out. Get teary, call a mummy friend who can relate, but remember, if you are ever worried that what you’re feeling goes beyond the usual mother blues, see your GP. It’s never too early to get help.
