New car seat to tackle ‘forgotten child syndrome’

With the sound of an alarm, this car seat will remind you that you have a child buckled into your vehicle. While we all think it could never happen to us, the constant stream of ‘forgotten child syndrome’ stories reveal otherwise. And this high-tech car seat is the latest advancement in the battle against young children dying in hot cars.

The Evenflo Advanced SensorSafe Embrace Infant Car Seat was launched only days ago and is being sold exclusively by American retail giant Walmart. It works by reminding the driver that there is a child in the car seat, after the ignition is switched off.

Walmart’s director of corporate communications tells Yahoo, “Every car on the market today sounds an alert to remind passengers to put on their seat belt and we feel this similar type of reminder will help ensure children don’t suffer from vehicle heatstroke”.

A wireless receiver plugs into the car’s On Board Diagnostics, and it syncs with the chest clip that goes on the baby once in the car seat. If the car is turned off while that clip is buckled, a series of tones will be sounded. Here’s a look at it in action:

While the seat doesn’t use mobile phone or Bluetooth technology, it will generally only work for American cars manufactured after 2008. The seat costs around US$150, and will be exclusive to Walmart for 12 months.

Unfortunately, Evenflo tells us that there are no plans to bring this car seat or SensorSafe technology to Australia, but we’ll let you know if that changes in the future.
