Umbilical cord

The umbilical cord connects a baby to its mother inside the uterus. One end of the umbilical cord is attached to the baby and the other end is connected to a placenta. The umbilical cord carries nutrients, antibodies and oxygen to the baby in-utero.

After the baby is born, the cord is usually "clamped" with a peg-like device and then cut - close to the baby's belly - to free the baby from the placenta. The leftover bit of umbilical cord then dries and heals, forming a baby's belly button.
