Amy Schumer’s perfect response when asked how she’d cope if her son has autism
Amy Schumer’s latest Instagram post brought forward an inappropriate question, but the quick-witted comedian’s come-back was perfect.
Getting a little too personal
Amy is never shy in coming forward with the more personal details of her life and her fans generally love and admire her natural openness. However, her recent Instagram post, an adorable picture of herself with her oh-so-cute baby Gene at the beach, captioned with the question, “Would anyone be interested in seeing a docu-series of my pregnancy and birth?” brought up another issue altogether.
Asking this question alone was bound to prompt very direct reactions. Most followers were thrilled with the idea while others were most definitely not. One follower, however, took the matter one step further, suggesting instead of documenting her pregnancy and birth, that Amy makes a documentary about her discovery of husband Chris Fisher’s diagnosis of autism and how she copes with the possibility of Gene also having autism.
“Not really, honestly,” the follower replied. “I think you’re great, I just feel like it’s self-serving and overdone. I’d like to see a documentary of you discovering your mate is diagnosed with autism and how you cope with the possibility that your child will be on the spectrum….”
Best come-back ever
When our favourite funny lady saw the comment, she did not hesitate in firing back and her response was absolute gold.
“How I cope? I don’t see being on the spectrum as a negative thing. My husband is my favorite person I’ve ever met. He’s kind, hilarious, interesting and talented and I admire him. Am I supposed to hope my son isn’t like that? I will pay attention and try and provide him with the tools he needs to overcome whatever challenges come up like all parents. I’d be disappointed if he liked the Big Bang theory and NASCAR not if he has ASD.”
As one fan said, “This might be the greatest response in the history of Instagram comments.”
“I pray my son finds a woman just like you”
Amy’s reply prompted a host of comments from others living with autism, as well as a further flurry of love and support.
“Yes!!!!” said one. “My son has Aspergers and he’s one of the most endearing people I’ve ever known. I’m so proud that I made him!!! He’s incredible.”
“I pray my son finds a woman just like you to accept him exactly how he is. Just like I have,” said another, while one parent simply said, “As a mom of an ASD child thank you”
Amy famously spoke of her husband’s diagnosis of ASD on her Netflix special Amy Schumer: Growing. She would no doubt show the same love and support for her son should he also be diagnosed. As with many others in the world, it’s simply not an issue. Besides, in Amy’s mind, there are far worse disappointments to cope with further down the track, such as the possibility of Gene liking NASCAR and The Big Bang theory – clearly, that’s another whole kettle of fish.
