Any tool that will put your mind at ease so you can snatch just 30 straight minutes of sleep is a lifesaver during those early days with a newborn when you’re feeling a bit lost. Unfortunately the lost feeling never goes away completely, but a consolation is that the tools to help parents find their sanity are getting pretty amazing.

One of those tools is the Babysense2 Infant Breathing Movement Monitor and Secure 850 Digital Video/Audio Baby Monitor by Oricom. We had three Babyology Influencers: Madelin from the Bean Bible, Lisa from ExclusivelyMum, Deauvanne of Mama Stylista, as well as yours truly test out the monitors. Keep reading to find out what we thought.

Oricom Exclusively Mum 3

Lisa from ExclusivelyMum is a seasoned mother of three and an old pro when it comes to baby movement monitors. She used a monitor for both her three-year-old and five-year-old and tested Oricom’s Babysense2 on her four-month-old baby.

“I have always used a movement monitor for each of my children, and I like the added reassurance that having one provides. Unlike other monitors that I have used in the past, the Oricom Babysense2 is [included] as a medical device on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. If no movement is detected for more than 20 seconds, or baby’s breathing slows to less than 10 breaths per minute, the alarm will sound. I know from previous experience with other less expensive brands that they regularly experience false alarms, however this has not happened with the Babysense2 in the time that I have trialled it.

“Having the added functionality of the video monitor provides even greater reassurance. The picture quality is very good, even in low or no light thanks to the infrared LED camera. The adjustable temperature alert is also very useful in helping me to maintain an ideal temperature in the nursery and keep baby comfortable.”

Nights out when you have kids are rare, and with three, even more so, but using the Babysense2 makes Lisa “feel much more comfortable having my infant minded by family and friends knowing that they will be using the monitor as well.”

The fashionable Deauvanne from Mama Stylista is a blogger and stylist, and former model and presenter. Wrangling a three-year-old boy and 10-month-old girl and blogging about some pretty incredible fashion and events means she doesn’t have time for figuring out fiddly devices. Who among us does? She was pleasantly surprised at how easy the Oricom monitors were to get set up.

“I was very impressed with the Babysense2 system. I was a bit worried putting it together, I thought it would be extremely complicated but it wasn’t at all! The instructions were really clear and the illustrations helped. It took me about 15 minutes to set everything up (after charging) and I didn’t ask [my husband].

“The nightlight and room temperature features work really well. I worry so much in those important first 12 months and this system has everything in place to reassure me and make my life less stressful. A definite sanity saver!”

Oricom Bean Bible

Madelin from The Bean Bible is the last of our external reviewers to check out the Babysense2 and video monitor. After a few hiccups, like when she accidentally switched on the music in her four-month-old’s room, Madelin was up and running, ready to compare this model to her own, previous Oricom model.

While she found the camera’s LED light bright – her old model has a small red light – there are lots of features she loved about the new model, like the temperature display controls, the enormous screen on the hand held monitor, and the microphone on the baby camera. In fact, everyone liked this feature as a way to comfort their baby using just their voices.

Madelin has “[wanted] the Babysense for a while so it was a nice surprise to be able to test it out – it’s perfect because it stays in one place instead of having to be attached to the baby.

“Being able to know that if she stopped breathing the monitor would pick it up is a huge relief. Being able to move around the house and backyard and take the monitor with me was also great.”

As for me, I have two boys, aged four and one, and have used a camera monitor religiously to keep an eagle eye on my precious charges, and also to gaze at them lovingly while I’m meant to be spending time with my husband.

What first struck me about the Oricom was how solid and high quality the monitors and camera are. I love that the camera has a rubber base to stop it skittering off the tall boy if I knock the power cord. The screen on the parent monitor is nice and big, and the controls intuitive. I didn’t even have to crack open the manual to work out the buttons, although like Madelin, I did inadvertently blast Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in the room with my light sleeper of a baby.

I wish I’d had the Babysense2 as a first-time parent, or when my second was an infant. Constant worrying is the name of my parenting game and this would have given me great comfort. I love how easy it was to install, and when I did a test, the alarm was very loud, sounding through a closed door, down the hall and into the lounge. It never went off for real, a fact of which I’m glad.

The Babysense2 and Secure 850 value pack retails for $459. You can find stockists at Oricom.
