Valentine’s Day may be a day designated for lovers – but when the ones you love include your kids, Valentine’s Day can take on a new meaning. And because kids love nothing more than to shower mum and dad with love via breakfast in bed (weak tea and cold toast, anyone?!), you can get them sorted in the kitchen with some simple breakfast ideas they can make themselves  (and you might actually want to eat) to celebrate this special day with the entire family.

Some of these are definitely special occasion recipes (not healthy enough to eat every day!) but for a special treat they deliver on wow-factor while still being easy to make.

1. Heart-shaped French toast

Bread dipped in an egg and milk mix and then pan fried for a minute or two until crisp is an excellent breakfast any day of the week – for Valentine’s Day, the kids could go one step further and use a heart-shaped cookie cutter on the bread before dipping into the mix to create beautiful little morsels of french toast yumminess.

2. Homemade strawberry milk

Red is the colour of love, right? So that makes Valentine’s Day the perfect time to whip up a divine strawberry smoothie that’s big on colour and flavour. Simply combine a handful of freshly washed, hulled and halved strawberries, half a ripe banana, 1 cup milk and 1/4 cup plain yoghurt in a blender. Whiz until smooth and then pour into a chilled glass.

3. Heart-shaped baked eggs

You’ll need a heart-shaped silicone muffin tray to make these little beauties – but the good news is that if you have purchased it for the purpose of making pretty baked eggs, you’ll quickly find plenty of reasons to use it in the production of heart-shaped muffins and cupcakes and the like. To make the baked eggs, preheat the oven to 180°C. Spray the tray with baking spray. Crack an egg into the middle of each heart and bake in the oven for 15-20 mins until just set. Remove from the oven, allow to set for a couple more minutes before removing from the tray.

4. Pink pikelets

Pikelets are just about the easiest things to create from a batter – and all kids love to make (and eat) them. To turn these bite-sized family favourites into a Valentine’s Day snack  has never been easier. Using a healthy pikelet recipe as a base (choose one that opts for wholemeal flour and a minimum of sugar), just add 250g strawberries that have been washed, hulled and sliced thinly lengthwise to the mixture before dropping spoonfuls into a hot greased frying pan. If you want to go all-out, these can be turned into pretty heart-shaped pikelets by placing the mixture into that ever-useful heart-shaped cookie cutter.
