We thought we’d seen it all when it came to cake surprises but this cleverly conceived solar system cake, definitely takes the cake! Pun intended.

 The humble bake

The pictures of the world-beating Galaxy Cake were uploaded to photo sharing site Imgur and shared on Reddit. Sydney mum and baker extraordinaire, Naushee, captioned the post humbly – “I made a birthday cake, it’s vanilla flavored.”

The cake was baked for Naushee’s four-year-old son, Ilyas.

Needless to say, the response to her brilliant baking effort was not quite as restrained. Everyone who stumbled across the post went a little bit nuts about it. Some wondered at the wisdom of calling it a ‘space cake’. Some wondered at the colour of post-cake poop. Others were desperate to make their own and pleaded for a helpful how-to they could follow.

“My dad loves space and I would love to recreate that cake for his birthday!!!”, one follower said.

“Great attention to detail! I’m sure you really had to planet!” another quipped.

“That cake is so impressive! I now have a new baking goal,” one commenter wrote.

How did she do that?!

Soon Naushee was sharing more images and some further instructions on how she’d created this baking wonder of the world – which even features its own Milky Way.

“Thank you for all your interest and kind words. My son, friends and family were pleased, so I was pleased with how it turned out.

“I wanted to make a galaxy/space cake that was space-y on the outside, but also space-y on the inside. I could not find a recipe so I had to improvise,” the boss baker explained.

Tools of the trade

Carefully coloured vanilla cake mix and a cake pop baking pan are the secret-squirrel method behind this excellent clever cake build madness. And patience, of course, because this is not a speedy project. It is, however, a jaw-droppingly worthwhile project and Naushee’s recipe and instructions bring it within everyone’s birthday reach.

“Make white cake mixture and separate into five parts. I wanted Earth, Mars and the sun, so I coloured each part a different colour green, blue, red, orange and yellow,” the clever Sydney mum explained. (Just be sure to keep aside some white for your Milky Way, too!)

These are baked in the cake pop pan, trimmed neatly into perfect spheres and then popped into a galactic-ly coloured and swirled marble cake mix to be baked again into the final cake.

Then ice and Bob’s your uncle!

It sounds simple enough, but it’s obviously a labour of love. We’re so glad this ace mum has done a super-inspiring test run on our behalf!
