Babyology Founder and Managing Editor, Mandi Gunsberger, took the stage at Google’s monthly Inspire Event to share the story behind the birth of Babyology. Mandi spoke to an engaged audience keen to know how the entrepreneur and mum-of-three took her concept nine years ago of a website with information on premium products for new mums to the powerhouse media outlet it has become.
The audience listened as Mandi shared how her father’s passion for creative expression and his ability to be a jack of all trades ultimately encouraged her to be whatever she wanted to be. When expecting her first baby, Mandi found herself collating spreadsheet after spreadsheet on every product available on the market for her new family addition, and after copious amounts of research, she realised that this information wasn’t readily available to Australian mums.
So Mandi and her husband Ben thought it would be a good idea to share her findings with other mums, in the form of a website, bringing Babyology to life.
Mandi shared key insights into her business and how it works, including how the website went from a small business where Mandi did everything herself, from writing editorial to selling advertising, to a thriving business with 40 employees contributing daily.
Mandi explains that part of the unique business model that allows Babyology to be so successful is that staff work remotely from locations all around Australia. When asked if she thought that model is sustainable, she confirms it has worked for nine years and expects it will continue to work even as the business grows.
“By having employees working remotely from their own homes, not only are we able to keep overhead costs down, but we are able to retain some of Australia’s most talented professionals in the media industry. We aren’t limited to hiring staff who can work in one location. We have our head of sales based on the Sunshine Coast, our editor hails from Melbourne, we’ve got staff in rural Victoria, the Blue Mountains, everywhere really! And not only are they all uniquely talented individuals, but they are all mums, which means as a business, we really understand our audience,” she reveals.
