Hurrah! The Duke and Duchess of Sussex – Harry and Meghan – have welcomed their first baby together.

“6th of May, 5.26am, 7lbs and 3oz”

As speculation was reaching fever pitch and all eyes on the Sussex Royal Instagram account, the word we’d all been waiting for got out. Late yesterday the Palace confirmed that “The Duchess went into labour in the early hours of this morning. The Duke of Sussex was by Her Royal Highnesses’ side. An announcement will be made soon.”

And indeed it was. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first child arrived a short time later – a little boy – and an obviously thrilled Harry shared his thoughts on this big development early this morning Australian time. Above all, he paid tribute to Meghan.

“Meghan and myself have a baby boy,” the elated prince told the BBC. “It’s been the most amazing experience I could ever possibly imagine.

“How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension,” Harry said, “but we’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful to all the love and support from everybody out there. It’s been amazing, so we just wanted to share this with everybody.”

“I’m so incredibly proud of my wife. And as every father and parent would say, your baby is absolutely amazing. But this little thing is absolutely to-die-for so I’m absolutely over the moon.”

Harry explained they are “still thinking about names … The baby was a little bit overdue so we’ve had a little bit of time to think about it. That’s the next bit.”

“Healthy and well”

He said he planned to chat further in a couple of days “so everyone can see the baby”.

The birth was also announced across the royal social media accounts, revealing that “Her Royal Highness and the baby are both doing well” and that Meg’s mum Doria was at the pair’s Frogmore Cottage home supporting her daughter and “overjoyed” at the arrival of her first grandchild.

“The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives. More details will be shared in the forthcoming days,” Meg and Harry’s social media account said.

It’s a boy!

“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex was safely delivered of a son at 0526hrs this morning. The baby weighs 7lbs 3oz. The Duke of Sussex was present for the birth,” the official royal family statement read.

“The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer have been informed and are delighted with the news.”

“The Duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with Their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage.”

A new generation

The as yet un-named Baby Sussex joins cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis as part of a fresh new generation that is sure to further invigorate the royals.

Prince Harry is already contemplating baby number two, although it’s not known if Meg’s in on that plan just yet.

Meghan, Harry and baby Sussex will now settle into the newly renovated Frogmore House, with the expectation that Meg’s mum Doria Ragland will help out with the newborn in the early days. Doria completed a refresher course in caring for little ones last year, so she’s primed for the task.

First-time parents Harry and Meghan are the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, so it’s almost certain that they’ll follow William and Kate’s example and use the Sussex surname for their bub when it comes to nursery and school enrolment. Mountbatten-Windsor could be the more formal alternative.

Meghan readied herself for the birth with an intimate baby shower for close friends, held at New York’s The Mark Hotel. She then headed back to London with lots of gifts – including this ‘Mummy’ necklace and a cot for the royal newborn – to prepare for the birth, going to ground for over a month as she nested and readied herself for the huge job of birthing an entire human.

In the family way

Harry and Meghan announced what everyone had suspected, that they were in the family way, as they launched their tour of Australia in October 2018.

“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019,” Kensington Palace’s Instagram account stated.

“Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”

Since then royal fans have been on enthusiastic bump-watch, eager for any details about the tiniest new royal.

Not gonna lie, we can’t wait to find out more about this cute little one

Huge congratulations to Meghan and Harry.

Welcome to the world Baby Sussex!
