We often come across stories of mothers being harassed or shamed for breastfeeding in public. One mum is fighting back with a series of funny comics showing clever ways to hit back at those strange looks or negative comments some mums endure while feeding.
Funny comics about breastfeeding and home birth
Mum-of-four Heather Cushman-Dowdee started her Hathor the Cowgoddess character in 1999 – first in paintings, sculptures and performance art, and since 2002 as a web comic. The clever comics show Hather’s antics around breastfeeding, attachment parenting and home birthing.
On her Hathor the Cowgoddess and Mama Is … Comics website, Cushman-Dowdee says she isn’t aiming to be judgmental of other mums’ personal choices, but rather “the situation we find ourselves in”.
“I’m a mom that had a hospital birth, I had loads of breastfeeding difficulties, I’ve been known to yell. But I try and do better and I learn all I can,” she writes. “But you can’t homebirth if you didn’t know it was an option. You won’t choose it if you didn’t know it was safe. You’ll have trouble breastfeeding if you don’t think of it as normal, do-able, watch it in action. That’s why I cartoon. To share.”
She tells Huffington Post her Very Crafty comic (at the top of this post) is one of her biggest hits, “but there are a few more that are sure to titillate”. Indeed.
