Photographer’s fun twist on newborn portraits

Who knew everyday household items could turn ordinary photos into offbeat works of art? This photographer lets her imagination run wild for her newborn portraits, which use props such as vegetables, towels, scarves, plates, bottle caps, cut-out flowers and pearls. From babies riding on elephants and whales to playing superman, flying into space and even hanging on washing lines, they ‘re certainly not your usual baby photo.

London-based Neli Prahova’s primary focus switched from wedding photography to newborn portraiture when her son was born two-and-a-half years ago. “When I became a mother … I could feel my creative desires changing, urging me to use my new skills as a parent to create wonderful images that other new parents would treasure forever,” she says.

The babies in her photos are usually about 10 days old, when they sleep the most. “(Photographing) newborns is all about patience as it often takes a long time to rock them into sleep to be able to take those adorable newborn photos,” she says.

She has taken some inspiration from renowned photographers Anne Geddes and Adele Enersen, and keeps a constant eye out for props. “It’s all about the idea and then you start brainstorming,” she says. Prahova also does more traditional child and family photography. But we think you’ll agree these more whimsical images are exceptionally cute.
