Personally speaking, the most memorable part of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics was the architecture. Yes, I know it’s all about athletic performances but Beijing’s ‘Bird’s Nest’ stadium and ‘Water Cube’ National Aquatics Centre were truly breathtaking (see the image below for a reminder of the magical Water Cube).
But what happens after the Olympic crowds leave? The Chinese government invested over fifty million dollars to turn the Water Cube from Olympic pool to water theme park.
The water park has a wave pool, lazy river, spa area, thirteen water slides and rides with names such as the Bullet Bowl, the Speed Slide and the Tornado. For real thrill seekers, there’s the Aqualoop, a slide with a twelve metre free fall drop!
So while Aussie visitors to China might not be setting the same kinds of records as Michael Phelps at the Water Cube, they can certainly aim to clock a good time on the Speed Slide.
