Going on a beach holiday mid-winter might seem a bit strange to some, but it’s what I grew up with. Crisp, sunny days warm enough for paddling and foraging in the rockpools are what childhood memories are made of – we found that and more on a blissful weekend in the quiet New South Wales hamlet of Currarong at Breakaway Beach House.

I’m at the stage of life where slumming it has zero appeal for a weekend away. I want my comfy digs, a well-equipped kitchen and a stunning beach close by. I don’t ask for much, do I?!

Breakaway Beach House had everything a tired, city-weary family could wish for. Situated in Currarong, a town of just four hundred residents and approximately two-and-a-half hours drive from Sydney (and three hours from Canberra), the house was a mere stroll to a stunning beach with a sea pool and enough rockpools to keep my boys happy and entertained for hours. It’s when you come to a place like this you realise the very best activities for kids revolve around the ocean. They just never get bored or demanding!

Sleeping twelve people, the house is big enough for three families of four to come spend time together. The bunk room was a real thrill for my boys – it can sleep up to six – and they relished sleeping on the top bunk for the very first time in their lives. My bedroom was heaven with its comfortable queen bed and ensuite. The entire house is bathed in white, adorned with soft neutrals and tastefully decorated from top to toe. There’s a large backyard and huge deck with barbeque. Breakaway Beach House will even accommodate the family dog by arrangement!

A huge dining table for twelve is the hub of the house and the kitchen comes equipped with coffee maker, dishwasher, and lush red KitchenAid. We wanted for nothing during our stay – the fire was lit at night and spread its warmth through the house.

And then there was this (below) – the natural beauty of the area really relaxed us. All we wanted to do was stroll, dig in the sand and watch our boys relishing every second. We were even paid a visit by some kangaroos in the front yard on the first evening!

The small town of Huskisson and the spectacular Jervis Bay were a pleasant drive away but we liked staying close to home, taking the kids to the local skate park and admiring some of the mid-century beach houses in Currarong. There is a corner store which shuts at five and a great takeaway with fresh local seafood and old-fashioned hamburgers to fill hungry tums. If you’re looking for sophisticated shops and cafes, then stop in at Berry because a stay in Currarong is all about relaxing and getting back to nature.

We loved it and you will too – book your stay through the Breakaway Beach House website. The lovely Corinne made everything a cinch and we thank her for having us as guests at Breakaway Beach House!
