Your very own Muppet workshop

Kermit at fao schwartz Your very own Muppet workshop

When I was little, I really wanted access to Jim Henson’s ‘Muppet Workshop’. Now kids can.

World-famous toyshop, New York’s FAO Schwarz, is home to the Muppet Whatnot Workshop, where you can design your very own Muppet Whatnot. You may be wondering what’s a ‘Whatnot’ – Muppet aficionados will tell you that Whatnots are those crazy, colourful ‘extras’ that appear in Muppet Productions. As Kermit describes it, Whatnots are the “…curious yet talented characters who help us put on our shows.”

Whatnots can be tall, short, furry, hairy, blue, orange, green and anything in between – it’s all up to you and that’s what makes the Whatnot Workshop so much fun. It’s easy to create your own Whatnot – start by choosing a body, then add some eyes, a nose and some hair. Finish off your Whatnot with an outfit – the furry monster suits are certainly apt but I think my favourite is the Hawaiian shirt with coordinating lei.

Whatnots are US$99 each and you can build them online or at FAO Schwarz. Note that for Muppets created online, delivery is within the US only so you’ll need to call in the favours with friends based in America.
