Its charm is in its simplicity.
At first glance, My A-Z – the newest app from Night & Day Studios – appears to be simple alphabet flashcards for your phone (and very neat, well designed ones at that!). But the real fun is in the customising.
The app is designed to allow kids to build their own alphabet by taking their own pictures or recording their own sounds for each letter. For example, when my four-year-old daughter, Penny, took command she quickly replaced the illustration of the pear for the letter ‘P’ with a picture of herself – of course!

That was followed by a tour of the house, photographing all sorts of things to go with the other letters (although I must say that when my ten-year-old son discovered the sound record function and scrolled ahead to the letter ‘F’, I took charge of the iPhone again!).
The app has lots of uses apart from simple letter recognition. It also has application for non-verbal and special needs children as a communication tool and is terrific for little kids learning a second language.
My A-Z is available through iTunes for $1.99.

That is unreal! Maybe this will be the app to get a certain child in my home to stop obsessing about “Dragon Vale” every spare moment of the day…
