Wondering what Pinterest is? In short, it’s a visual bookmarking tool. Here’s a basic tutorial and here’s a snapshot of just how fast Pinterest grew in the latter half of 2011 (via TechCrunch). Its popularity has exploded so get on board and tap into the magic of Pinterest!

Ten years ago parents had very little choice when it came to furnishing the nursery; now there are so many attractive options that it can fluster a pregnant brain. Babyology comes to the rescue with our guide to choosing the best cot for you and your baby.

1. Start researching early

It always pays to start researching cots as early as possible and be prepared that you may change your mind a few times. Consider shop delivery times as the cot you want may not be available when you need it to be. Have a runner-up cot option just in case.

2. Consider sleeping baby in a bassinet at first

You can delay the purchase of a cot if you decide you’d prefer to sleep baby in a bassinet for the first four to six months. Many parents choose this option so that baby feels cocooned in a more womb-like environment than a cot can provide. This spreads out the cost of setting up for baby over a longer time span and the bassinet can be stored away for a sibling or two down the track.

Having a bassinet is handy as some have wheels so that baby can travel from room to room with you and while your second baby is little, it will give you time to transition the older child from cot to bed. A bassinet which sways and rocks will be soothing for a fussy baby.

3. The size of the room

If the nursery is small, the cot needs to fit and still leave space for other furniture. Where space is limited, you may want to consider a change table like the wall-mounted byBo Design Nathi or one that sits on top of the cot like the Oeuf Change Station.

We suggest sketching a brief room plan and taking measurements with you to the baby shop so that you don’t waste time evaluating pieces which aren’t suitable. Make a shortlist at the store, then check Babyology’s Cot Chooser so you can compare features.

4. Fixed side or drop rail

Some people like drop rails, some people need them and others don’t; drop rails are an individual consideration. Investigate whether the drop rails on the cots have a one or two-handed operation and go for the one-handed option.

5. Converts to toddler bed

Would you like to transition your toddler to a smaller bed before continuing to a larger bed? Toddler beds are great because they’re lower to the ground than a conventional single bed and can provide a feeling of security to some children as they are still essentially sleeping in the bed they had as a baby. Many cots come with conversion kits and others have one that you can buy once you need it.

6. Co-ordinating furniture

If you would like a seamless look to the nursery, investigate brands which make co-ordinating change tables, dressers and bookcases.

7. Factor in the cost of a mattress

Mattresses are almost always an add-on. Factor this cost into your budget and expect to pay from $100 to $200.

8. Look for adjustable mattress height

The cot should have at least two mattress height settings. You don’t want to be fishing a delicate newborn from the depths of the cot!

9. Teething rails and castors

Babies turn into toddlers and many a designer crib has had its rails made into mincemeat by a teething kid. You can get transparent covers for this stage which will protect your investment.

Also consider whether you’d like a cot with wheels. Castors make it easier to clean underneath the cot and move it to another room. Many cots are easy to move a few metres even though they don’t have castors; it depends how heavy the cot is so also factor in weight if you’re willing to forgo wheels.

10. You’ve made your choice… what now? Safe sleeping education!

Congratulations; you’ve made your choice and set up the cot. All is in place! Now it’s time to read up on safe sleeping for your baby. Please see the Sids and Kids guidelines on how to dress both baby and the cot for optimum safe sleeping conditions.

Important note

This guide is for parents choosing a new cot. If you are choosing a second-hand cot, be sure that the cot meets Australian Standards and that is has not been subject to a product recall. Do your research about what this entails and be aware that cot hardware can wear out from age and being assembled and taken apart many times.

My absolute favourite children’s boutique, this unassuming little shop in Melbourne’s north is a treasure trove of cool clothes and accessories for kids and the exact store we’d open (if Babyology was ever inclined to open a store, that is). A little voice inside my head did urge me to keep this particular gem to myself. One visit and you’ll be thanking your lucky stars that I’m not the selfish type!

There’s plenty of my own personal favourites too among the labels – the always edgy Littlehorn, the retro-classic Chalk n’ Cheese and the beautiful Edenstar. It doesn’t stop there – Minti, Chook Leak, Nanny Pickle, Milky, Toshi, And Me Too, Hucklebery Lane, Cheeky Little Soles and Cocoon Clothing are among the other labels you’ll find.

What I especially love about this shop is that owner Julia Mendola – a mum after my own heart – has stocked her boutique with clothes that children can actually wear, using her own two kids as yardsticks. Sure, there’s plenty that can do double duty for “good” but they’re handpicked to be perfect for the playground, the park, preschool and everywhere else you need to go, day in and day out, with kids in tow.

There’s a wonderfully eclectic cross-section of Australian designers and the best European labels as well. I also like how Julia starts with beautiful babywear but stocks bigger sizes too – up to a size ten in many labels – while most other boutiques cater strictly to little kids. There’s also a mind-boggling array of toys and gifts from Lark, Dumpling Dynasty, Alimrose, Melissa & Doug, Tiger Tribe and others, as well as some of the cutest hair accessories I’ve seen anywhere from brands including the delightful Shanghai Ruby.

Weird confession – I have ‘summer’ bed linen and ‘winter’ bed linen. My seasonal choices aren’t dictated by fabric (which is the obvious variation). No, all the linen is cotton. What divides the linen cupboard into ‘summer’ and ‘winter’ is colour and design. In summer I go for patterns that are simple, fresh and bright. In winter I choose heavier patterns in warmer colours. This goes for my own bed as well as my kids’ beds. So, given that I’m about to start looking at winter linen, it’s timely that we do a quick review of linen we’ve loved over the past year at Babyology.

First stop is the divine Jacob & Bonomi with their deliciously simple ‘Little Traveller’ print and ‘Tree of Life’ print. Both designs are available for single beds and for cots and both use crisp white as the starting point – ramp it up with a bright sheet or keep it simple and clean and stick with white. A duvet cover with pillowcase is $135.

There’s never a shortage of floral or checked bed linen (for grown-ups and kids) but there is a shortage of designs for boys that meet tween criteria. Here’s the thing – boys who are aged six and over generally don’t want to sleep among cars, trucks and trains. Then again, they might want something more than a simple check or striped fabric. What to do, what to do? Take a peek at Lilly & Lolly – their bold black and white ‘Fly By Night’ design featuring a few friendly creepy-crawlies is ideal. Likewise for girls, the ‘Tic Tac Toe’ design is pretty without the pink or floral overload – pick out your favourite colour in the design (yellow for me) and use that as your decorating theme. Lilly & Lolly duvet covers are $130 each.

The fresh, geometric prints at Habitat Baby prove just how good lots of different patterns layered together can look. Slightly retro for boys and slightly boho for girls, the duvet covers at Habitat Baby will definitely suit kids from toddler to tween and beyond. It was love at first sight when I saw the Skyline design by Dwell Studio – cool aqua, steely grey and a splash of orange, the geometric skyscraper design is sensational (shown at very top). Dwell Studio didn’t disappoint for girls either – the new Indian inspired grey and pink Zinnia Rose pattern is sweet but elegant. Duvet sets are $240 each at Infant Boutique.

My love affair with Kas Kids began with their Penny collection (shown at very bottom) – a Scandinavian inspired rainbow floral (I bought it for my own daughter, Penny, and switched the hot pink sheets for green). That love affair is set to continue – the forthcoming collection that we previewed at Kids Instyle in February looks promising indeed! There’s more Scandinavian touches (this time Vikings for boys) and a girls range in a refreshing green, orange and blue palette.

A quick mention also for Whimsy designs – their range is huge but there are a couple of standouts. For girls, the ric rac flowers of the Blossom collection are truly lush – somewhat reminiscent of chenille bedspreads common in the sixties. For boys, go for the pale brown matched with blue and red in the Kombi Vans and Double Decker designs. Whimsy can be found online at Giggle Smile Designs. Duvet sets begin at $109.95.

Well we’re not going to deny that Easter is all about family get togethers, chocolate, and for some, a time to reflect on their faith. Emma

Emma began her career as a commissioning editor in book publishing. In 2004 she moved to the UK and switched to the world of magazines and websites, eventually becoming Managing Editor of Arts Hub UK. She returned to Sydney in 2008 and is mum to one-year-old Josie, a baby who prefers socialising to sleep.

Emma spent much of her maternity leave pushing a pram around in the hope that window shopping would send a certain baby to sleep (it rarely did), or chasing bargains online, so she’s excited to be writing for Babyology and putting this experience to good use.

Anita

Anita is a mum to one little man, and is eagerly awaiting the arrival of her second son. Along with her husband, she lives in regional Victoria, where she is surrounded by friends and family. After completing a degree in journalism, she worked in public relations before heading into newspaper reporting, and eventually took up a position as a television journalist.

Although absolutely in love with the cut and thrust world of TV reporting, her love for children was far greater. And with this has come a complete immersion in all things baby and toddler, fuelled by her husband’s obsession with new gadgets (which incidentally their son has inherited). Thankfully, the virtual world has allowed her to indulge her family in innovative baby gear, uninhibited by the tyranny of distance.
