One of my favourite books at primary school was The Lettering Book – do you remember it or am I showing my age?! I favoured a particularly ornate italic script full of lavish flourishes or the bold, chunky Broadway font and thought the ‘computer writing’ was the height of modern. It must have left a strong … [Read more.]
My daughter is obsessed with building things right now and can’t get enough of making her own little houses, forts, planes, trees, animals or whatever else her flourishing imagination can come up with. It’s a marvel to witness.
Interactive play is terribly important for young children and water play is often a firm favourite with littlies and an easy option for parents. Now while I’m all for making a splash and dealing with the wet clothes later, there are times when it’s just not a practical option. So with this, I present to … [Read more.]
When my now husband and I first moved in together, we used to have some spectacular ‘disagreements’ whenever we set foot in a furniture or textile store. The problem wasn’t so much that we had different tastes, it was more that he appeared to be either colour blind or colour careless (such was his desire … [Read more.]
This made me giggle, so I hope you like it too.
Artist Walter Wick has put together a gorgeous little video on how he balanced 117 toys on a single 4×2 lego brick.

They may be made of wood, but these delicious toys from Little Sapling Toys remind me of smooth chocolate, perfectly moulded into appealing shapes. Babies and toddlers are sure to find them just as attractive – with teethers in organic forms, beautiful cube blocks and even a skittles set.

When I see wooden blocks as gorgeous as these, it makes me weep that blocks (other than Lego) aren’t a hit with my boys. Here’s hoping you have lots of little people who love to build, stack and arrange, because Miller Goodman has just announced the November release of PlayShapes.
When I was seven I spent a lot of time building with Lego. I always started my projects with building a house, but never on the scale of this! Built by James May (of Top Gear fame) this real-life Lego house is both a masterpiece and May’s dream come to life. May came up with … [Read more.]
It’s always struck me as a little ridiculous how so many presents given to mark a special occasion in a baby’s life end up languishing in the back of a cupboard or collecting dust on top of a shelf because they’re considered ‘too good’ to use. Of course, I’m talking about all those Bunnykins-style fine … [Read more.]
Combine two loves of littlies, rocks and building, and you’re on to a winner. I don’t think I’ve come across a child who doesn’t like to dig their tiny fingers into any sorts of rocks, whether in the garden or just lying about while on a walk. Even my daughter, who is decidedly anti-dirt, has a thing … [Read more.]
Every so often, we blog about another blogger – such is the way of cyberspace! When I read a little piece about the Lego vault by Jesus Diaz of Gizmodo, I immediately recognized some similarities with my own ‘Lego childhood’. Like Diaz, I was born in 1972 and grew up in the ‘Golden Age of Lego’. For every … [Read more.]
