Meet Zig and Zag – they have the inside word on exploring Rome.

Designer Alana Zawojski created ZigZag City Guides after noticing that while there were plenty of books for parents travelling with kids and plenty of activities to keep kids entertained during trips, there were few resources designed specifically for young children to use as tourists.

The first of the ZigZag City Guides focuses on Rome. The guide includes thirty interactive cards filled with facts and activities, and a foldout map of Vatican City (a place that’s just the right size for kids to take charge of the navigating!).

The level of information is pitched appropriately for kids – there’s a smattering of Italian phrases and words to learn (important stuff like the flavours gelato you may come across), as well as a card highlighting Rome’s cobble-stoned streets and another explaining how domes are built. There’s also mini-guides to major attractions (such as the Spanish Steps and the Pantheon) and some things to do off the tourist trail, such as a visit to the markets.

Zawojski has thought of everything – a day’s worth of cards can be carried in a card folder that can be worn around the neck – good to know kids will be hands-free and able to manage those gelatos!

City Guides for San Francisco and Paris are on the way – if you’re planning a holiday to either of those cities, stay tuned.

ZigZag City Guides are US$28 each and available directly from ZigZag City Guides, which is happy to ship internationally.
