It’s possible that some of my birthday cake efforts should have made it onto the Cake Wrecks photo blog, not because I can’t spell but because using a whole bottle of blue food colour makes icing look very unappetising!
If you haven’t visited Cake Wrecks before, block out some serious internet time and prepare to laugh. This hilarious photo blog documents all that can go wrong with cakes – both professionally iced and homemade creations. Play ‘Spot the order that was given over the phone’ or try to match cakes to occasions – I’m stumped when it comes to the Naked Mohawk Babies Riding Carrots Cake but do understand “Push, Olivia, Push” (just not sure whether you need a professionally iced cake delivered to you during labour…) and the special something to commemorate one lucky mum’s c-section.

Search through the blog for imaginative cakes for baby showers, birthdays and weddings or more ‘interesting’ occasions such as “Congratulations on your Teen Pregnancy” (nice) or “Welcome to PMS…” (as blogger Jen Yates notes, that cake better be chocolate). I particularly like the efforts made by some cake decorators to replicate cakes that customers have spotted elsewhere and the “Good luck in China” cake, complete with a picture of a fireman (with an unusual flesh-coloured hose). As with all the best photo blogs, it’s the witty commentary that is the icing on the cake.
And because there’s only so much cake you can have in one sitting, consider picking up a copy of Cake Wrecks the book – just think what a handy reference it will be in the kitchen. It’s available from Book Depository for $14.41, including shipping.
