A collection of nursery rhymes is a must for every child’s library. That said, finding the perfect collection is not easy. Unlike alphabet books, for which there is one in every style and theme imaginable, a wow-worthy collection of nursery rhymes is harder to come by.

Which is why the hippest toddlers will be all over Nursery Rhyme Comics: 50 Timeless Rhymes from 50 Celebrated Cartoonists, published by First Second Books.

Well known cartoonists and illustrators have applied their own distinctive style to the best-loved nursery rhymes from ‘Pat-a-Cake’ and ‘Jack and Jill’ to ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ and ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’. Each is told in comic book panels and in a different artistic style – some are quite dark, others obviously humorous.

What particularly appeals to me about this book is that most often children learn nursery rhymes orally, so to have a visual interpretation is good fun. Take a look at Sara Varon’s take on ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ and you’ll see what I mean – Mary and the lamb snorkelling?! I think kids will enjoy that.
