It’s never too early to introduce Austen. Don’t you agree?
Author Jennifer Adams and illustrator Alison Oliver have created board books for bubs that win the ‘oh-my-goodness-that-is-so-cute’ stakes, hands-down. Introducing Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice - as counting primers.
Each of these classics is retold in just ten images (to represent each number, one to ten). For example, Romeo and Juliet begins with one balcony. And then “Two loves” (sigh). Followed by “Three people meet” and “Four roses” and so on.

Pride and Prejudice is gorgeous – although you don’t get the delicious subtleties of stolen glances between Lizzy and Mr Darcy in a board book, there are four marriage proposals and nine fancy ball gowns, beautifully illustrated by Oliver (more sighs).

Young literature fans will be happy to know that Jane Eyre and Alice in Wonderland will be given the BabyLit treatment next. There’s also BabyLit iPad apps available.

These stunning books are available from Book Depository for $9.88 each. Book Depository ship free of charge to Australia.
