For the very best retro decor in the nursery, you can’t go past prints from Ladybird books.
For those that enjoyed Ladybird books as a child, a visit to the online Ladybird Prints shop will be a long, long walk down memory lane. There are literally thousands of images in the collection from every Ladybird book published.
The first Ladybird book was published in 1940 and its small, hardcover format with full colour illustrations was an instant hit with children. The themes of Ladybird books moved with the the times and included series on learning to read, how things worked (such as computers in the 1960s), adventures in history, occupations and hobbies.
Personally, I have fond memories of ‘Understanding Maps’, a title originally published in 1967. My father was a lecturer in geography and so this little Ladybird was my bedtime reading! However, the images from my favourite edition may not make the most ideal choice for decorating the nursery wall, unless you want to instill an early appreciation of contour lines. Instead, look to titles such as ‘Shopping with Mother’ and ‘Helping at Home’ for some delightful illustrations of happy families in the 1950s and 1960s.
Ladybird Prints will print your favourite illustrations on paper or canvas in a range of sizes and finishes. Prices begin at £7.50 for a standard photograph sized print on paper and range up to £225 for a 125cm stretched canvas. For those of you that may have trouble narrowing down your selections from the 4,500 available illustrations, you can sort favourites in the ‘My Gallery’ section of the website. Ladybird Prints deliver to Australia.
