By nature, most children’s drawings and paintings are relatively simple. But what if you were to take a child’s drawing and add details such as light, shade, depth and intricate facial features?
The Monster Engine, an eleven-year art project created by illustrator Dave Devries, takes children’s drawings and paints them professionally. The results are a bit scary, a bit gruesome and most likely considered thoroughly awesome by their ‘original’ artists.
The Monster Engine project has been turned into a book which includes the original drawings, Devries’s painted interpretation and interviews with the children who dreamed up the amazing creatures.
Take a moment to watch the interview clip with Devries – the footage of him running a classroom session where a monster is created before the children’s eyes is great.

Do we really need an adult to reinterpret kids art? I prefer to let them speak for themselves!
Yes! All three of my children are very arty. Look at these that Dylan did when he was only 5! Imagine what the top one would look like

Those are awesome drawings–proves that kids are not afraid to draw scary things.
