I remember being simultaneously thrilled and scared by the story of Hansel and Gretel when I was little – it was the lure of the sweet-covered house in contrast with the fattening of the children and the chicken bone bit that got me every time.
Louise Rowe’s superb new pop-up edition of Hansel and Gretel is so beautiful that it may well offset the scary bits of this classic fairytale. We first reviewed Rowe’s fine paper engineering in April last year with her take on Red Riding Hood. Like Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel will amaze with its complex and intricate pop-up scenes.
Using her trademark, muted autumnal tones, Rowe creates a superb pop-up forest, house made of sweets and more, all accompanied by a suitably wide-eyed Hansel and Gretel.
Hansel and Gretel by Louise Rowe is available from Fishpond for $21.97.
