What child’s bookshelf is complete without an Enid Blyton mystery?
To mark the seventieth anniversary of the first adventure of Enid Blyton’s classic characters, The Famous Five, five of the series book covers have been redesigned by five famous Famous-Five-loving illustrators (try and say that quickly!).
Quentin Blake, Helen Oxenbury, Emma Chichester Clark, Oliver Jeffers and Chris Riddell have each illustrated the cover of a Famous Five story and each has stamped their own distinctive style on stories that generations of kids have enjoyed. I love Oxenbury’s drawing for Five Go Adventuring Again and I particularly like Jeffers high-suspense illustration for Five Go to Smuggler’s Top.
Quentin Blake said of the project, “It is always a wonderful challenge for illustrators to create new images for iconic words… In doing so, they have breathed new life into favourite stories for those who know them well and those who are discovering them for the first time.”
The 70th Anniversary Famous Five editions will be released in Great Britain in May. They’ll be priced at £5.99 – no word on an Australian release so we may have to keep an eye on Famous Five stock at our good friend, Book Depository.
