A lone figure sits on the edge of the moon, fishing for stars – what beautiful imagery and the perfect place to begin a magical story.
There’s something about these stunning illustrations that draw me in – some are playful, some are strange, others are whimsical, and I can easily describe several as haunting. I love the idea of being able to not just look at a picture, but become part of it by telling my children stories, using illustrations as a starting point.

If you’re a fan of children’s art that’s a little left of the norm, Majali Design and Illustration’s creations are right on the money. These pieces come from the creative mind of Maja, a Swedish freelance illustrator and graphic designer, and mother of two.

There’s such a vast contrast between Maja’s pieces, from the fragile and hopeful Fishing for Stars (at top of post) to the nervous tension of Little Red Riding Hood Meets Wolf in the Forest.

The twist on childhood favourites is a refreshing surprise, with Counting Sheep a beautiful and dreamy rendition of that twinkling place between wakefulness and sleep.

You can snap up a piece of this beautiful artwork from Majali Design and Illustration for US$20, in varying sizes. Each piece is signed, titled and dated. You can also purchase a set of eight postcards for US$16, postage to Australia is US$5.
