Drew Barrymore has never been one to perpetuate the perfect parent or perfect family myth. Of course this only serves to make us love her more… especially on Instagram where she’s having a red hot go at authentically portraying a real – and sometimes complicated – life.

Proud. Me and my mom. On Mother's Day!

1. When she did hard things with her mum

Drew and her mum, Jaid Barrymore, have had an understandably fragile relationship, but on Mother’s Day, Drew shared a candid and smiley shot of her rarely-seen mum.

Drew’s early fame – and parenting challenges – saw her in rehab at just 13, living solo in her own apartment at 14 and emancipated from her mum and dad at 15. Apparently, following the death of her dad John Barrymore, she’s been working on finding a way to include her mum in her life.

“When I was a kid, everything was so unplanned, my parents were so erratic and my world was so inconsistent,” she told Marie Claire

2. When she worked hard to make EX mean excellent

While Drew has split from Will Kopelman, she’s heartily including him in her life as a pal, acutely aware of the vital role he has in their children’s lives. This post from the weekend paid tribute to the new relationship they’re forging as separated parents to daughters Olive and Frankie.

“Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on. Our children are our universe, and we look forward to living the rest of our lives with them as the first priority,” the pair said when they announced their divorce.

They certainly seem to be following through on this pledge.

3. When she lived the glittery, pants-free, popsicle-laden dream

Drew put forward a pants-free-with-popsicle birthday perspective that we’d never considered before – and we’re here to tell you that we are 100 percent in!

This freestyle ethos is just another example of the relaxed approach Drew has to parenting and it’s an inspiration to us every single day.

“My kids live for glitter,” Drew told E News. “I have a vacuum, so I say live your glitter dreams.” So. Be. It. *hurls glitter*

4. When she pointed out that the little things are the big things

Granted, at the end of a long day of tantrums, hurled sultanas and Texta stains on the couch you might be seeking to put your head on the kitchen table and thump it back and forth repeatedly.

Drew and her gosh-darned cute little sneaky kiddo hand remind us that there are treasures in there amongst the less shiny bits and if we look for them, love might just get us through. (No need to thump!)

 5. When she honoured the individual

On Mother’s Day, Drew posted quite a lot of pics to Instagram! We loved it that she took the time to share a pic of each of her daughters – individually – and celebrate their unique goodness separately. Each their own important person with their own special qualities. Naw.

If this doesn’t prove that you should be following Drew Barrymore on Instagram, we don’t know what will!

Are you following along with the Barrymores like us?!
