California couple Daniel Vongnakhone and Krystal Jugarap’s first baby is due in February, and they’ve next-levelled the whole milestone-tracking thing, straight out of the gate, with this Stranger Things gender reveal.

The upside-down?

Mum-to-be Krystal told ABC News they wanted to share their baby’s gender in a”fun” way “for the people that we weren’t going to see in person.”

These cute sci-fi nerds were keen to replicate some scenes from Netflix hit Stranger Things. The resulting video emulates the memorable parts of the show where Winona Ryder’s character communicates with her missing son, using a similar alphabet-light set-up.

DIY spook

The couple bought a bunch of Christmas lights, painted the alphabet on their lounge room wall and YouTube-d instructions on how to illuminate them, one by one.

“I knew the new season was coming so I thought I’d mention it to Krystal and figure out how to do it,” Daniel said.

Tricking the lights up to “communicate” and illuminate individually, as they did in Stranger Things, proved harder than Daniel had envisioned. Luckily he has a clever and persistent baby-mama.

“I got really busy with work and almost gave up on the idea, but Krystal was determined to figure it out,” Daniel admitted.

Once completed, the pair posted a video of the lights illuminating, triumphantly spelling-out “it’s a girl”. It’s been viewed over 1.4 million times and shared widely be various media outlets.

“Don’t assume!”

The response to their clever and sparkly work has also been plentiful and varied.

“And they named her Eleven,” one viewer quipped, referring to the Stranger Things character played by young actor Millie Bobby Brown.

“What happened to popping it out of between your legs as a gender reveal. Everybody wants to be trendy,” a grumpy Facebook user wrote.

“Don’t assume its gender!” another person pleaded.

“The show is based off a real couple?” someone who’s entirely missed the point, posted.

Keen to fully cement their nerd status, Krystal and Daniel told ABC News they plan to name their daughter Leila Rey, inspired by their favorite movie, Star Wars.

And here’s the new Stranger Things Season 2 teaser (and an extra teaser for those who play along on Twitter), just in case you’re as excited as we are about the next instalment of this show!
