The Nappy Collective – finding new homes for leftover nappies

I could never quite believe it was possible for a baby to grow out of nappies seemingly overnight but memories of a few exploding nappies remind me otherwise. And of course it’s Murphy’s Law – you stock up on nappies at a bargain price and then your baby has an enormous growth spurt, rendering stock-piled nappies useless in your household. So, what to do with all those left-over (but perfectly good) nappies?

The answer is The Nappy Collective. Started by a group of Melbourne mums, The Nappy Collective is an organisation that collects leftover unused disposable nappies and redistributes them to organisations that support families in crisis or in need.

Three times a year (for a fortnight in February, June and October), nappies can be dropped off at designated collection points (the collection points range from chemists and cafes to stores and gyms). At the end of the two week collective the nappies are sorted, packed and distributed to organisations that support families in crisis or in need (particularly women’s shelters).

A handful of leftover nappies may not mean much to you or me, but collectively can make a huge difference, reducing the financial burden on families in need.

The next collection runs from February 17  to March 2, 2014. You can get involved by donating your leftover nappies, volunteering your time to help sort and pack nappies, or you may know of a business that could become a Nappy Collective collection point. At this stage the program is running in Melbourne and Sydney but there are plans to expand to other states.
