Yeeeeeeee-hah! Come hitch your wagon to Theo’s most magnificent Wild West first birthday, where all the little cowpokes are free to run completely amok… and no-one bats an eyelid!

We adore this party because it shows that you don’t have to have a picture-perfect party table with picture-perfect party food to make an impact. In fact, the somewhat wonky wagon wheels and other homemade treats are very much part of the charm at this here shindig.

Mum Claire settled on the cowboy theme for her son’s first birthday in homage to Theo’s nickname, Buster. And that’s where the fun really starts.

She let her imagination run wild when it came to creating a party feast for the posse of cowboys and cowgirls. So they nibbled on Giddyup gingerbreads cut into cowboys, Stetsons, boots and cacti, using cookie cutters found at The Raspberry Butterfly, they gorged on chunky cowboy cookies, apparently made to former US First Lady Laura Bush’s recipe and packed with chocolate chops, pecans, coconuts and other ‘bad stuff’. Campfire cupcakes and lolly Redskins and Milky Bars (the Milky Bar kid, gettit?) rounded out the sweet side of things.

For savoury options, the cowpokes supped on nachos, Hunky Chunky guacamole, Texas Hold ‘Em pies of pumpkin and feta and Lone Star triangles of spinach and ricotta. And they washed it all down with “cactus juice”.

Claire made this Sheriff Theo cake herself using The Australian Women’s Weekly birthday cake bible, Kids’ Party Cakes. Magnificent, isn’t it?

Of course, Claire didn’t just rely on the nattily named food to let guests know they were in cowboy country. She kicked things off with a cowboy themed invite and other printables from Etsy store 10 Candles, while the printable menu cards used to great effect on the party table came from Etsy’s Green Apple Paperie. The blue and red colour scheme continued with tableware from Paper Eskimo and Sambellina, sourced from The Party Parlour and Twiggi, along with the simple brown goody bags and other bits and pieces.

The guests took home more than just lollies in their goody bags. Claire made bandanas using Wild West cowboy fabric found at her local Spotlight, also the source of the cowhide patterned fabric used for a table runner.

Imaginative touches continued with a guessing game of lollies in a jar using chocolate bullets rather than the more typical jellybeans. Claire also used a stash of moving boxes – the family had only just moved to Sydney a few weeks before the celebration – to create a makeshift jail photo booth.

And take a look at their homemade wanted posters – apparently sleep deprivation does count as a form of torture!
