Moo, baa, ooh-la-la… welcome to Kirby’s completely brilliant barnyard birthday. With three children under four to wrangle, mum Kelly could have been forgiven for slapping a candle on any old cake when her youngest turned one. But no. Instead, she put together a party that – if you’ll pardon the pun – is certainly worth crowing about.

Kelly decided on a barnyard theme for her son’s first birthday, and went all out with an animal farm in the backyard complete with piglets, lambs and baby goats. She needed to do something extra special to distract the little guests from the wonders of her party table, we’re thinking!

Cuddly animals aside, there were lots of other special touches, many of them sourced from that online paradise of all things handmade, Etsy. The colourful themed invitation (above) and printables came from Etsy store Stockberry Studio. The pint-sized farm animal pinatas discovered online at Pinatas by Michelle did double-duty as table decorations. And just look at the darling organic calico goody bags she found at Jennifer’s Cookies. Perfect for a farm party!

Now, onto the victuals. Being a busy mum of three with a part-time job to juggle as well didn’t leave much time for fussing over the food. Kelly kept it simple, mixing a few homemade delights like truffles, macaroons and fairy bread with store-bought cupcakes and other treats after wisely deciding she’s yet to meet a toddler who can tell the difference!

The stunning birthday cake, with its fondant farm menagerie (pictured below), came from a local Geelong cake artist, Bell’s Cakes, recommended by a friend in Kelly’s mother’s group. There’s Kelly and birthday boy Kirby making short work of the candles below. Such a simple, fun party – we adore it all. But our favourite thing? It has to be that vibrant photo board (pictured top) perfect for capturing fun shots of each guest.
