Here’s a party that might just be the most original we’ve ever seen.
Come inside Hudson’s most amazing first birthday with its trés eco-chic recycling theme. Who knew going green could be so damn stylish, not to mention so much fun?!
We’re completely in awe of Hudson’s mum Jessica, who gets full points for both her superb creativity and her decorative pizazz. The attention to detail at her son’s soiree is just amazing, from the eco-friendly non-toxic Honey Sticks crayons and potato stampers on the craft table to the organic meatballs and chicken wings served in their teeny-tiny recycled paper cups.

We especially love the mandarins displayed in the glass jars on the buffet table – a clever, tooth-friendly twist on the jars of lollies more often seen at kids’ parties these days. It’s eye candy without the sugar high. But before readers pipe in that a children’s party isn’t a party without some sort of sugary treat, we’d like to point out the darling little apricot-jam filled doughnuts made with love by Hudson’s own great-grandfather.

The eco theme carried right through to pass the parcel, with presents in each layer including wooden cars and yoyos for the boys, whistles and frog-shaped castanets for the babies, beaded wooden bracelets and felt purses for the girls, and organic lollipops and O’Bon brand pencils made from recycled newspapers for everyone.

We’ve already mentioned the eco-friendly craft table and here’s a pic. Jessica also hoarded cardboard boxes for months before the big event and used them as jumbo-sized Lego-like building blocks, roping in all the children to build a rather wobbly fort. Other oversized boxes were fashioned into cars and the like. Fun, fun, fun!

Here’s another fun idea we love – a special quiz for party guests to see how well they know the birthday boy.

Finally, we must mention the darling party bags. Each contained ingredients for little guests to make their own batch of play dough at home, with a fool-proof recipe, a wooden spoon for mixing and a little cutter to boot. Here’s a picture of the beaming birthday boy with his uber-creative mum and dad Danny. Jessica, your party really does take the cake!

i LOVE this party idea
‘WOW’ is the word!
WOW! So much effort.. I spent two days getting my son’s 1st birthday cake perfect. I could just imagine how much time you put into Hudson’s party. Well done! And such a great idea ;)
Thanks ladies! It was a labour of love!
I’m the type of person who pre plans as much as possible and probably started planning it when he was only 8 months… I like to give myself the time!!! His 2nd birthday is nearing quickly, in June and i’m already more than halfway thru the planning. But his year I have to be, Hudson’s first little brother or sister is due only 4 weeks after his birthday!!! My tips are shop online as much as possible, and just think outside the “typical party box” and you will wow your little guests and big ones too!!
Love, love, love it Jessie! can’t wait to see what you do for birthday Number 2 xx
I love it! Looks absolutely amazing. Well done:)
Also have to mention that my good friend Jodie Greck from Jodie Greck photograpghy was my happy snapper there on the day!! She was invited to come with her boys anyway, so i asked would she take a few picks along the way, and I’m soooo glad i did!! http://www.jodiegreckphotography.com.au
Hudson’s party had a no present policy, so a few people helped organise and helped the day run smoothly, in leiu of gifts. It’s the perfect compromise!!!
And for his 2nd birthday coming up, I am having the same policy, No Gifts!!!! Instead I’ve ordered an Eco friendly Fair trade soccer ball with very cool spots on it, for people to simply write a message on! http://www.belleandboo.com
@ babyology girls, no pic of the salad boxes!?!?! hehheheh!! that was one of my favs!!! But since your website is so fantastic, you’re forgiven!!
We had the coolest organic salad boxes… mmmmm!
Jessica, it’s your own fault for throwing such a brilliant party! You had so many amazing photos that we couldn’t possibly run them all and were forced to choose. Tragically, we’re suckers for doughnuts so the salads lost out!
@ nikki!!! Yes I know, the doughnuts are always a winner, Hudson’s great Dedo is 87 or something like that, and for every party over the last 10 years since i’ve known the family, he’s made them… Up at sometimes 3 in the morning to make sure they are nice and fresh… They are like little clouds of goodness… But fried! So even better!! I can totally understand how the salads lost out to the doughnuts!!! Thanks again for featuring Hudson’s party!!! He thinks it’s great to see the pic of “mum, dadda, Hud!”
Hi Jessica. Fantastic ideas. Well done.
I had trouble finding eco invitations and supplies for my third child’s 1st birthday. From there I started my own eco business. I sell eco party supplies – plates, cups, cutlery, candles, decorations more – in eco party boxes. All our products are 100% biodegradable and compostable. It’s all we sell. Please visit us before your beautiful baby’s 2nd bithday. http://www.ecopartybox.com.au

great ideas.
I’m planning my daughter’s 4th birthday party, and we’re doing a few things to make it a bit more “environmentally-friendly”.
We’re using paper plates and cups for the kids; pass the parcel will include recycled colouring pencils; I got a few things from ecopartybox (seedling pots/seeds); kraft brown paper bags for the party bags; earthgreeting invitations and so on. We’re just doing a few small things to make a difference.
Love all the cute ideas for this party! Can you tell me where the food picks and cups for the meatballs came from? I need that exact setup for an event.
Hi Sara,
The cups are actually Jiffy cups, i bought them on eBay. They are supposed to be for planting seedlings, and are compostable etc. We lined them with baking paper/parchment paper to be able to put food in them. The food picks i do not remember where i got them from, but try http://www.thecookingcompany.com.au Its an awesome store at Noosa if you are in SE QLD.
