Stuck on a theme for a first birthday? Just take your lead from this clever mum. Vanessa was having the very same trouble until she hit on the idea of using her baby boy’s star sign as inspiration. Pisces? Sounds like the perfect excuse for an Under the Sea party to me! And that’s exactly what Vanessa did to celebrate her son Hayden’s big day.

Vanessa kept the party low-key but lashed out on a professional photographer to document the day. From the looks of it, it was money well spent. We especially love the photographer’s idea to give the excited birthday boy a “smash cake” to tear into, guaranteeing lots of adorable and messy cake shots!
But back to the ‘Under The Sea’ theme. Vanessa kept things deliberately simple with a blue and orange colour scheme. That’s blue for the ocean and orange for everyone’s favourite fish, Nemo, of course. She made the personalised happy birthday banner herself (pictured top) using free underwater-themed printables from craft blog Pink Tea, threading the letters onto orange grosgrain ribbon.

On the food side, guests nibbled on homemade fish and chips (what else!), sushi, garlic and chilli prawns, and starfish-shaped fairy bread before tucking into those sea-themed jellies and buttercream-topped cupcakes. Don’t you just dig those little sailing boats below? And get a load of the birthday cake! Lucky Vanessa has a very talented cake-baking friend – I need to find me one of those!

Perfect Sydney weather meant the party could be held outdoors, giving all the little guests plenty of room to run. They were kept entertained with bubble machines, a ball pit, a sand and water table, as well as a magnetic fishing game from Early Learning Centre.

Departing guests were given a simple handmade paper party bag filled with lollies and fish-themed bubble bath from The Party Parlour. It’s a celebration so delightful that we’re sure party-mad Babyologists everywhere are turning sea-green with envy! Now here’s one last look at the birthday boy with his happier-than-happy parents.

What a lovely looking party and family :)
Love the simple yet effective jelly cups.
More ideas added to my birthday party folder.
My little great-niece has already requested a fairy party for her 5th birthday in Nov. (in her own way) She has been talking about a fairy cake since new year. When somebody upset her, she told them they weren’t having any of her fairy cake (me included). What’s more, I don’t know what I did wrong (according to her) that day. Usually I get “told off” in her own little way.
