Think playgrounds and the traditional swings, slides and climbing frames immediately come to mind. Not in the German town of Wiesbaden. Kids there have a different type of playground.

Wiesbaden’s Schulberg ‘sculptural playground’ was designed by architecture and landscape studio, Annabau.

The playground shape was inspired by the skyline of Wiesbaden and includes winding pipes, a climbing net, swing ropes with different levels of difficulty, rotating rubber plates, tunnels, bouncing and sliding walkways, a nest swing, a steep climbing wall and platforms. Each element is cleverly designed in sequence so that children can progress around the sculpture in a continuous circuit. Enclosed by the sculpture are rubber hills and rings which provide a play space for younger children.

Nearby artist‘s studios and a restored Roman aqueduct from the third century complete the Schulberg precinct, a stunning blend of the historic and the modern aspects of Wiesbaden.

I think the pictures speak for themselves – this playground is awesome. I particularly like the fact that the structure is challenging and requires children to rely on agility to navigate their way around. The stunning views of Wiesbaden aren’t bad either!

Find more fabulous playgrounds here, including my personal favourite, the simple ‘Monster’s Footprint’ in China.

  1. This is just awesome! I wish we had something like this when we were young! Oh how the world is advancing! I wonder if it can take the weight of a ‘big kid’, say like me! :)

  2. I actually live in Wiesbaden so it was quite strange to see this review. We will have to go and check out the park although it’s a bit too early for my 8 week old son to enjoy it yet….
