I’ve had Iceland on my mind ever since I saw their sensational tourism advertisement (which prompted our post about family travel in Iceland). While I have no immediate plans to travel to Iceland, I can still shop Icelandic style!
With characteristic Scandinavian simplicity and freshness, Icelandic designers have put their mark on everything from architecture to fashion. There is a large and tempting list of online stores featuring designers from Iceland and I’ve picked out a few choice items for children.
I’m fairly certain that kids in Iceland would get more use out of the beautifully rustic D-sledge by Dagur Oskarsson than kids in Australia – but that doesn’t stop us admiring this clever piece. Based on a centuries-old design, the D-sledge is in fact made from lightweight polyethylene plastic (above).
Some puzzles are stand-alone design pieces, like the traditional Icelandic game of Völuskrín (which can be found in Australia at Third Drawer Down) and the modern Puzzled by Iceland jigsaws, described as “Icelandic nature in a box” (and a very stylish box at that!).
Simple and quite frankly perfect, Ole Søndergaard’s planes are the ideal wooden toys.
Decorate with Scandinavian style with nursery pieces hailing from Iceland. Some are simple, others more decorative. Start with designer Anna Thorunn, whose nature-inspired pieces range from gorgeous cushions shaped like mountains (above), reindeer magazine racks on wheels (below) and wall hooks that look like a cross between antlers and the branch of a tree.
There’s also a sculptural tree hanger (sized for jewellery and hair accessories), fun antler wall hooks and a fuzzy stool that’s perfect for little monsters.
Reindeer can also be found at Stáss Ornaments on colourful cushions, together with bunny and swan shaped clocks and wall decals in traditional and children’s patterns.
I particularly love the unusual Raven hangers by designer Ingibjorg Hanna Bjarnadottir. Intended for displaying favourite clothing, the Raven looks striking suspended from the ceiling (below).
Scandinavia is renowned for simple, modern and practical children’s clothing and designs from Iceland are no exception. For an Icelandic take on the pram blanket, look no further than the woollen Baby Seal blanket by Vik Prjonsdottir (shown at top of the page). They are also available in adult sizes and I’m guessing are the Icelandic version of the Snuggie (below).
